Shillong: Meghalaya has witnessed a remarkable increase in its voter base over the past 20 years, reflecting both population growth and improved voter registration efforts, officials said on Tuesday.
Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Dr. B.D.R. Tiwari said the number of registered voters in the state has surged from 13,35,816 in 2005 to 23,06,384 as of September 2025 — an addition of nearly 10 lakh electors.
Of the total, male voters rose from 6,64,306 to 11,37,316, while female voters increased from 6,71,510 to 11,69,062.
Six voters have registered under the third gender category.
Dr. Tiwari’s statement comes ahead of the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls scheduled across the country.
He said the 2005 electoral roll, published on April 15 of that year with January 1, 2005 as the qualifying date, has been used as a reference point for comparison.
He informed that the ECI recently held a national conference of Chief Electoral Officers to assess states’ readiness for the revision exercise.
Following the meeting, Meghalaya began its preparatory work, including a preliminary mapping of its current electoral rolls against those from 2005.
The CEO added that the 2005 Electoral Roll and an online search facility for voters are available on the official CEO Meghalaya website.
For the upcoming revision, voters will need to provide valid documents such as identity cards, birth and educational certificates, and proof of residence or caste.
As per a Supreme Court directive, Aadhaar cards can also be used as supporting proof of identity but not as evidence of citizenship.
To ensure smoother polling, stations with more than 1,200 electors have been rationalised.
The ECI has approved 49 new polling stations and merged 12, bringing the total number in Meghalaya to 3,615 — a net increase of 64.
East Khasi Hills district now has the highest number of polling stations at 1,030, followed by West Garo Hills with 570 and Ri-Bhoi with 338.
