SHILLONG: Power Minister AT Mondal has committed to bringing all villages in the state under the electrification umbrella by 2028.
The Minister made the announcement during a press briefing on Monday, following a meeting with a delegation led by Congress legislator Charles Marngar from Mawhati.
“We are on the job and we will try to see that all these un-electrified villages will be brought under electrification,” Mondal told the press.
His statement came in response to pressing concerns about irregular power supply and the lack of electrification in various villages within Marngar’s constituency.
Marngar underscored the struggles faced by residents in Mawhati, Sonidan, Umtrai, and Umsiang due to inconsistent power supply.
The Mawhati legislator also pointed out that some villages urgently require electrification despite the installation of electricity poles and cables under the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY-I) in 2018-19.
These villages, including Makdoh, Muska, Amjong, Markhangduba, Amdubighat, Amphreng, and Nongthymmai Makdoh, have been de-electrified due to faulty lines.
In response, Mondal assured that efforts are being made to address these issues. “We will try to see that these villages are also brought under electrification,” he stated.
The minister also highlighted the dynamic nature of the challenge, noting that many villages have recently emerged or expanded, necessitating continuous updates to the list of un-electrified areas.
“This is due to the emergence of many new villages and the expansion of existing ones. These are ongoing issues, not problems that have been pending for a long time,” Mondal explained.
He assured that the department is working diligently to ensure that no household is left out, even in newly constructed areas.
The state power department reportedly has conducted a comprehensive survey, identifying villages that still lack electrification.
