Shillong: In a significant border security operation, Meghalaya Police apprehended five Bangladeshi nationals at Byrnihat, Ri Bhoi district.
The individuals were traveling in a tourist vehicle without valid documentation.
The detained persons have been identified as Hafix Sigdah (56), his wife Ujala Begum (35), and their three children: Harim Sigdah, Lejaa Khatun, and Alina Khatun. According to authorities, the family had entered India illegally in 2024 and was attempting to return to Bangladesh via Shillong.
During the routine NAKA (Naka Checking) operation at Byrnihat around 7 am, police stopped the vehicle for inspection.
Upon questioning, the passengers failed to produce any valid travel documents, raising suspicion.
Further investigation revealed their illegal entry into India and plans to cross back into Bangladesh without proper authorisation.
A case has been registered against the individuals, and they have been produced before the court.

The investigation is ongoing to determine the extent of their illegal activities and any possible connections to human trafficking or other cross-border crimes.
This incident highlights the persistent challenges faced by authorities in securing the porous India-Bangladesh border.
