SHILLONG: Meghalaya Police have detained three individuals in Ri Bhoi district for their alleged involvement in drug trafficking, seizing narcotics worth an estimated Rs. 1 crore.
The arrests took place in the 15th Mile area of Byrnihat, where the suspects were identified as Ekramul Hussain, Monjuwara Begum, and Nihar Begum, all residents of Assam.
Authorities suspect the trio to be part of an interstate narcotics smuggling network that sourced drugs from other states and generated significant profits through illegal trade.
During the operation, the police confiscated heroin, Rs. 58,380 in cash, and four mobile phones from the accused.
These seizures provided further evidence linking the suspects to organised criminal activities.
The case has been registered at Nongpoh Police Station under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

To ensure a thorough investigation, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to delve into the case’s complexities.
The SIT will probe the suspects’ connections with other drug traffickers and investigate the financial aspects of their operations, including property acquired through illicit means.
Authorities have also announced plans to seize such properties in accordance with the law.
“This timely arrest underscores the persistent threat of drug peddling in the region. It highlights the need for continuous vigilance and coordinated efforts to combat this menace,” a police spokesperson stated.
The incident has once again drawn attention to the ongoing battle against drug trafficking in the region, prompting calls for sustained action to dismantle such networks and curb the spread of narcotics.
