Nongpoh: The Ri Bhoi District Police in Meghalaya penalised more than 2,500 vehicle owners for a range of traffic violations and collected fines amounting to Rs 8 lakh.
The extensive drive, which began at 7 pm on Tuesday and continued until Wednesday morning, targeted offenders violating key traffic safety norms.
Officials said the violations included riding without helmets, failure to wear seat belts, driving without valid documents, overspeeding, lane indiscipline, driving under the influence of alcohol, and illegal vehicle modifications.
Police officials said the operation was launched in response to a worrying rise in road mishaps reported across Ri Bhoi district in recent weeks.
“The initiative was aimed at ensuring better road discipline and public safety,” a senior police officer said, adding that such checks will continue regularly to deter reckless driving.
