Shillong: With the election process for the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) gathering pace, the National People’s Party (NPP) has said it is in the final stages of selecting candidates and is likely to announce its list within the week.
NPP working president Marquise N. Marak said the party will contest all constituencies in the upcoming GHADC elections and has received an overwhelming response from aspirants.
In several constituencies, multiple applications have been submitted for party tickets, with as many as seven contenders vying for nomination in some seats, he said.
Marak indicated that the screening process is nearing completion and the party leadership is working to finalise candidates at the earliest.
He also claimed that the main contest would be between the NPP and the Congress, while asserting that the Trinamool Congress (TMC) lacks organisational strength in the region. According to him, TMC may struggle to field candidates in all constituencies.
Meanwhile, the Meghalaya government has formally initiated the electoral process for the reconstitution of the GHADC.
