Shillong: The North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) in Meghalaya has constituted a committee to prepare a comprehensive report on allegations of mismanagement and administrative failures against Vice Chancellor Prabha Shankar Shukla.

The committee, headed by NEHUTA president Lakhon Kma, comprises members from various stakeholders including NEHUTA, NEHUSU, KSU NEHU unit, and senior professors.

The committee’s findings will be submitted to the two-member committee appointed by the Ministry of Education to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the matter.

Kma said they are compiling a detailed report to provide strong evidence supporting the allegations of irregularities and misconduct against Vice Chancellor Prabha Shankar Shukla.

The internal committee is likely to submit its report by Tuesday.

The committee’s report will focus on four key points indicated by the Ministry of Education, he said.

Kma stated that the committee is preparing a detailed report, akin to a dossier, to present a compelling case against Prof. Shukla. This report will be supported by substantial documentation to substantiate the allegations of misconduct. He emphasized the extensive nature of the irregularities and wrongdoings allegedly committed by the Vice Chancellor.

“It is an extensive exercise to prepare the report,” he said.

Shukla is accused of NEHU’s declining rankings, controversial appointments, infrastructural neglect, and “non-responsiveness” to student concerns.

The university’s acting Registrar, B Rynjah, stated that they have not received any intimation on the visit of the two-member committee constituted by the Ministry of Education.

DK Himanshu, Under Secretary in the Ministry of Education, earlier stated that the two-member committee will be led by Prof DP Singh, former Chairman of the University Grants Commission, as chairman. Prof Dilip Chandra Nath, a former VC of Assam University, will be the other member.

The committee will probe allegations such as NEHU’s declining rankings, controversial appointments, infrastructural neglect, and “non-responsiveness” of Prof Shukla.

The significant drop in NEHU’s ranking in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) is attributed to alleged administrative failures and negligence.
