Shillong: The case of a missing tourist from Indore and the suspicious death of her husband continues to raise concerns in Meghalaya, with the state’s lone BJP minister, Alexander Laloo Hek, voicing support for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe, as demanded by the victims’ family.

The couple, Raja Raghuvanshi (29) and his wife Sonam Raghuvanshi (27), had arrived in Meghalaya for their honeymoon on May 20 and disappeared three days later while exploring the scenic Sohra-Cherrapunji area, a major tourist destination in the East Khasi Hills district.

On June 2, Raja’s decomposed body was recovered from a deep gorge near Weisawdong Parking Lot at Riat Arliang after being spotted by a police drone.

Authorities involved in the case have intensified the search for Sonam, who remains missing as of now.

Teams comprising Meghalaya Police, NDRF, local volunteers, and villagers are using drones, sniffer dogs, mountaineers, and extensive manpower to comb the terrain.

A L Hek, who handles the Animal Husbandry, Veterinary, and Fisheries portfolios, told reporters on Saturday that there is no opposition from Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma regarding the possibility of a CBI investigation.

He noted that such a probe would align with the family’s demand and could bring clarity and justice.

The family of the victims suspects foul play, particularly Sonam’s brother-in-law, Govind Raghuvanshi, who insists that this is more than a case of accidental death.

Raja’s personal belongings—including gold jewelry and his wallet—were reportedly missing, and a bloodstained machete and raincoat found near the body have fueled speculation of murder.

Govind reiterated his call for a CBI inquiry, stating, “We believe this wasn’t just an accident. My brother’s valuables are missing, and we strongly feel this needs a central investigation.”

In response, Meghalaya Police have already formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by a Superintendent of Police, assisted by four Deputy Superintendents of Police.

The couple had reportedly rented a two-wheeler during their travels in the region. Their mobile phones went offline on the night of May 24, further deepening the mystery.

Authorities say that while the recovery of Raja’s body has provided some clues, the circumstances around the couple’s disappearance—and Sonam’s current whereabouts—remain unclear. The search operation continues.
