Baghmara: Meghalaya on Tuesday celebrated its 54th Statehood Day with a historic state-level function held for the first time in Baghmara, South Garo Hills, paying tribute to the founding father of the State, late Captain Williamson A. Sangma.
The official celebration was attended by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui, senior government officials and public representatives.
The event marked a significant departure from tradition, underscoring the government’s emphasis on inclusive development and its commitment to ensuring that no region of the State is left behind.
The programme began with the rendition of the State Anthem by the Khmih Choir, Shillong, followed by vibrant cultural performances showcasing the traditions of various tribes of Meghalaya.
Addressing the gathering, the chief minister said the creation of Meghalaya was the result of divine blessings, collective sacrifice and a shared vision that transcended tribal and community differences.
Paying homage to leaders who led the statehood movement through non-violent and persistent struggle, he recalled how unity had been the driving force behind the demand for a separate State.
Expressing concern over present-day divisions, particularly on social media, the chief minister said negativity and hatred were deeply troubling and urged citizens to remember the values upheld by the State’s founders.
He also conveyed warm greetings and best wishes from the Prime Minister, who, in a personal letter, recalled the contributions of late P.A. Sangma to Meghalaya and the nation.
Highlighting development over the past several years, the chief minister said Meghalaya has recorded an average growth rate of around 10 per cent over the last three years, placing it among the fastest-growing States in the country.
However, he stressed that development should be measured by its impact on people’s daily lives rather than by statistics alone.
He emphasised the importance of mindset, clear district-level planning and defined targets to ensure meaningful progress.
Calling the decision to hold the celebration in Baghmara deeply symbolic, he said the district, being the home of late Captain Williamson A. Sangma, was the most fitting place to honour his legacy.
He also announced that the second phase of the Baghmara water supply project, costing Rs 140 crore, had been cleared, and assured that issues related to road connectivity and healthcare infrastructure, including the upgradation of Baghmara Civil Hospital, would be personally monitored.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong described the celebration as historic, noting that such a major Statehood Day function was being held in Baghmara for the first time.
Acknowledging that South Garo Hills has long been regarded as one of the more backward districts, he said the government is making concerted efforts to ensure last-mile development through improved connectivity and infrastructure.
He informed that around 60 per cent of the Shillong–Baghmara road connectivity work has been completed.
Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui said Meghalaya Day was an occasion to reflect on the State’s journey and plan for the future.
He noted that sustained, people-centric governance since 2018 has brought visible changes across regions, with leadership and development initiatives no longer confined to major urban centres.

He highlighted efforts to promote unity through language learning programmes and skill development initiatives aimed at enhancing employability and dignity of labour.
Chief Secretary Dr Shakil P. Ahammed, in his keynote address, stressed the need for balanced growth, stating that development must be uniform across regions.
Referring to Vision 2032, he said it is backed by planning, accountability and execution, and outlined achievements in sectors such as roads, education, agriculture, power reforms and entrepreneurship.
During the programme, Meghalaya Day Awards, Meghalaya Day Excellence Awards and Governor’s Police Medals were presented in recognition of exemplary service.
A video titled Rise Meghalaya, highlighting the State’s development journey, was also screened.
The celebrations concluded with a vote of thanks by B. S. Sohliya, Secretary and Director of Information and Public Relations, followed by the rendition of the National Anthem.
