Ampati: In a tragic incident, a 26-year-old man was trampled to death by a wild elephant in Meghalaya’s South Garo Hills district on Saturday.
The deceased, identified as Rikrak S Sangma, hailed from Jolgaongre village of South West Garo Hills.
The incident occurred while he was attempting to chase away the herd of wild elephants to protect the agricultural produce.
On hearing the news, the locals rushed to the spot and found the body on a bamboo stretcher near the incident site.
As wild elephants often intrude into human habitation, villagers try to ward them off to protect their houses and agricultural land, a local said.
This incident follows a similar tragedy last month where a wild elephant trampled one Border Security Force (BSF) personnel to death near the Indo-Bangladesh border in the West Garo Hills of Meghalaya.
