Shillong: The Meghalaya police on Thursday apprehended a 30-year-old man in Shillong for allegedly making anti-national comments and supporting the recent terror attack in Jammu & Kashmir’s Pahalgam on social media.
Simon Shylla, a resident of Umlyngka in East Khasi Hills District, was arrested by the special cell of East Khasi Hills after he posted anti-national comments on a video aired by a Guwahati-based news channel in connection with the recent terror attack in Pahalgam.
“Shylla, using his Facebook account under the name “Man Shylla”, made the comments by supporting the terrorists in their killing,” Vivek Syiem, district police chief of East Khasi Hills, said.
Furthermore, he is accused of exhorting terrorists to initiate similar attacks on a specific community in the Northeast, thereby threatening the unity and integrity of the country.
“Such statements are deeply disturbing and have the potential to create communal tension and incite violence,” Syiem said.
Following the receipt of credible information, the Special Cell, East Khasi Hills, zeroed in on Shylla and apprehended him from his residence.
During the arrest, two mobile phones were seized from his possession.
Notably, the Special Cell of East Khasi Hills is a specialized unit within the Shillong police that handles various issues, including insurgency, narcotics, and human trafficking. It also includes a Special Operation Team (SOT) and an Anti-Narcotic Task Force (ANTF).
A case has been registered against Simon Shylla at Lumdiengjri Police Station under sections 113(3), 196(1)(a), and 147 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita(criminal conspiracy, promoting enmity on the basis of religion, and actions that threaten the country’s integrity).
The accused will be produced before a court on Saturday. The investigation into the matter is currently underway.
