SHILLONG: In the run-up to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Meghalaya BJP is leaning towards fielding AL Hek, a six-time MLA, as its candidate for the Shillong seat.
Despite not yet finalising candidates, party insiders consider Hek a robust contender to represent Shillong in the Lok Sabha, indicating a probable nomination.
On the other hand, party vice president Bernard N Marak aspires to contest the Tura seat, but the BJP is in a state of indecision.
Marak’s electoral ambition faces hurdles due to an ongoing legal dispute, preventing a clear path for his candidacy. Additional contenders from Tura are also reportedly vying for the BJP ticket.
The party plans to conclude its selection of Lok Sabha candidates post-December 3, coinciding with the announcement of Assembly election results in five states.
This delay allows for a comprehensive assessment of the political landscape before finalising nominations.

Meanwhile, expressing dissatisfaction with the current National People’s Party (NPP) MP from Tura, Agatha Sangma, BJP state president Rikman Momin criticised her performance.
Refraining from commenting on the sitting Congress MP from Shillong, Vincent Pala, Momin highlighted the need for improved implementation of central schemes for the benefit of the people.
As potential candidates approach the party for tickets from Shillong and Tura parliamentary seats, Momin affirmed that the final announcement would come from the Centre.
Earlier on November 24, the NPP declared it’s candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha Polls.
Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh would be contesting from the Shillong seat, while incumbent Agatha Sangma will try and register another win from Tura.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestione Tynsong, addressing the press, said that the party has chosen Lyngdoh and Sangma after deliberating on approximately 5 to 6 aspirants.
