The Meghalaya government has launched a groundbreaking “Land Bank” initiative aimed at boosting tourism infrastructure across the state.

The program seeks to address the shortage of accommodations in popular tourist destinations, promote sustainable development, and create significant employment opportunities.

Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh unveiled the initiative, highlighting its potential to transform the state’s tourism sector.

The government has issued a call for Expressions of Interest (EoI), inviting landowners and community groups to partner on accommodation projects.

The deadline for submissions is set for mid-January 2025.

“The Land Bank initiative will be instrumental in expanding accommodation in underserved areas like Dawki, which, despite its popularity, faces limited infrastructure,” Lyngdoh explained.

He also pointed out the untapped potential of regions like Garo Hills, which are ideal for adventure and wildlife tourism, and emphasized that such projects will drive economic growth and uplift underdeveloped areas.

Dawki, known for its crystal-clear river, has seen an increase in tourists but suffers from a severe accommodation shortage.

The Land Bank initiative aims to bridge this gap by fostering partnerships between the government and local stakeholders willing to offer land for tourism development.

“We are actively seeking collaboration from landowners and communities to bring this vision to life,” Lyngdoh said.

“The EoI process is already underway, and we urge all interested parties to submit their proposals by mid-January. This collaborative approach ensures shared benefits for all involved.”

Under the initiative, the government plans to establish joint venture agreements with landowners to develop eco-friendly accommodations that align with Meghalaya’s commitment to sustainable tourism.

By targeting areas like Garo Hills, which remain relatively underexplored, the initiative aims to diversify the state’s tourism offerings and attract a wider range of visitors.

Beyond infrastructure development, the Land Bank program is expected to have a profound socio-economic impact.

Lyngdoh anticipates the initiative will generate over 100,000 jobs in the next two to three years, benefiting local communities and contributing to economic revitalization.

With its focus on inclusivity, sustainability, and community empowerment, the Land Bank initiative reflects Meghalaya’s dedication to leveraging its natural beauty and cultural assets.

It aims to establish the state as a premier tourist destination while driving economic growth and job creation across the region.
