Ampati: The Meghalaya Koch Students’ Union (MKSU) commemorated the 515th birth anniversary of the legendary warrior Chilarai (Sukladhwaj Koch) with a grand event at Dumnigaon in South West Garo Hills.
The program, attended by distinguished guests and community members, paid homage to the iconic leader renowned for his military prowess.
The event began with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp by Jalaram Koch, Gaonbura of Dumnigaon and Kandarpa Koch, President of MKSU.
Prominent personalities, including Meghalaya Koch Association (MKA) General Secretary Jayanta Koch, Assistant General Secretary Kamaleswar Koch, Anando Ko Janardan Koch, Ashok Koch (In-charge Secretary Census & Statistics), and Nirmal Koch, President of Krorang Mathop (Koch Literature Society), were present.
Vedvyas Koch, Joint Secretary of KKM, Nilendu Koch, Vice President of MKSU, Bireshwar Koch, Organising Secretary of MKSU, Basudev Koch Secretary Youth & Affairs of MKA and zonal members from Harigaon also participated.
A vibrant cultural performance featuring traditional dances added a festive touch to the occasion, reflecting the rich heritage of the Koch community.
Chilarai was born as Shukladhwaj in 1510, was the younger brother of Koch King Nara Narayan. Known for his sharp military acumen, he played a crucial role in expanding the Koch dynasty’s empire. British traveler Ralph Fitch once lauded him as “Suckel Counse,” highlighting his strategic brilliance.
The event also recalled the legacy of Maharaja Viswa Singha, founder of the Koch royal dynasty in 1515 AD, under whose reign Chilarai emerged as a remarkable leader. His dedication to learning in Varanasi and mastery of warfare were highlighted as key aspects of his enduring legacy.
