Shillong: Meghalaya’s karate contingent made a strong mark at the 19th All India Independence Cup Karate Championship in New Delhi, returning with an impressive haul of 41 medals, officials said on Wednesday.
The state squad claimed 10 gold, 16 silver and 15 bronze medals across kumite (sparring) and kata (choreographed movements).
Among the top performers were gold medallists Audrella Carisa Marbaniang and Nathaniel Levin Suting, who were part of a 57-member team led by Donboklang Lyngdoh, Greater EM Kharpuri and Pynhunlang Kharbuli.
Altogether, 35 athletes won medals, with six competitors picking up two each.
The double medallists included Dominica Phidahun Kharbani (silver, bronze), Esaranaki Kharjana (gold, silver), Ferrando Wanniang (gold, bronze), Mebapynhun Marngar (silver, bronze), Nathaniel Levin Suting (gold, silver) and Xenia Rose Nongsiej (two silver).

The 10 gold medals went to Audrella Carisa Marbaniang, Aventinus George Mylliem, Eric Banteinam Ryngnga, Esaranaki Kharjana, Fadrik Wanniang, Ferrando Wanniang, Garret Ivan Lyngdoh, Lapyntngen Mary Lamin, Nathaniel Levin Suting and Samuel Kurbah.
The All Meghalaya Karate-Do Association (AMKA) congratulated the winners for their outstanding performance and praised the entire squad for their commitment and spirited effort throughout the championship.
