Shillong: The Central Executive Committee (CEC) of the Jaintia National Council (JNC) on Monday (December 8) announced a mass agitation against the proposed Shree Cement Integrated Cement Plant at Daistong village, accusing the government of failing to respond to complaints over the alleged illegal transfer of tribal land.
The decision was taken during an urgent virtual meeting earlier in the day.
In a video statement, JNC president Sambormi Lyngdoh said the organisation had “waited long enough” for the authorities to address their concerns.
“We have come to one clear decision: as we warned earlier, if there is no response from the government after our submission of complaints, we will not sit idle with folded hands,” Lyngdoh said.
President Sambormi Lyngdoh said the Council had already sent multiple communications to the authorities over the past weeks, including a formal complaint to the Deputy Commissioner of East Jaintia Hills on November 28, urgent clarification letters to the Chief Executive Member of the JHADC on December 3, and a detailed complaint to the Commissioner of Land Revenue in Shillong on December 4.
“Unfortunately, till date, there has been no response from any authority,” Lyngdoh said.
The Council will hold a public demonstration on December 10 at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office in Khliehriat, featuring placards, speeches and a mass gathering of supporters.
Issuing a call for unity, the JNC urged residents of Daistong and neighbouring areas affected by the proposed cement plant to join the protest without fear.
“Do not fear and do not feel uncomfortable. JNC stands firmly with you. Come join us on December 10,” Lyngdoh appealed.

He further urged the public in East Jaintia Hills to move beyond social media commentary and participate actively in the issue, saying, “Show your love for our land, not just online. Step up and support this vital issue that impacts our community, our land, and our future.”
