Shillong: The Meghalaya government issued an advisory urging cinema exhibitors and other stakeholders across the Northeast to strictly adhere to the provisions of the Cinematograph Act, 1952, and certification guidelines laid down by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

The advisory, issued by the Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR), Meghalaya, follows a communication received from the CBFC Regional Office in Guwahati.

It has been circulated in public interest to ensure lawful and responsible exhibition of films in cinema halls and public auditoriums across the region.

According to the CBFC advisory, cinema owners and exhibitors have been directed to strictly enforce age-based restrictions for certified films.

Entry of persons below 18 years, including children, is prohibited for films certified under the ‘A’ category, and exhibitors have been asked to verify identity documents and display appropriate notices.

Violations could attract penalties, including fines and imprisonment, as prescribed under the Act.

The advisory also reiterates compliance with revised ‘UA’ certification guidelines, which include age-specific sub-categories such as UA 7+, UA 13+ and UA 16+.

Exhibitors have been advised to clearly display parental guidance warnings and ensure that age-related restrictions are followed in line with certification norms.

The CBFC has further cautioned that no film may be publicly exhibited without a valid certification, and that approved public service announcements and social films must be screened before feature films, as mandated.

Failure to comply with these requirements could result in penalties, including fines, suspension or cancellation of licences.

Officials said repeated violations or unauthorised alterations to certified films would invite stricter action under the Cinematograph Act and relevant rules.

The CBFC has called on all stakeholders to collectively ensure a legally compliant and responsible cinematic environment for audiences across the Northeast.
