RESUBELPARA: In an effort to raise awareness about the importance of early cancer detection, the State Cancer Society of Meghalaya organised a one-day cancer screening and awareness programme at Resubelpara Community Health Centre, on Monday.
Dr. Anisha Mawlong, the nodal officer of the society, led her team to Resubelpara CHC, where she stressed the significance of early cancer detection and prevention to the attendees.
During her address, Dr. Mawlong stressed on the need to educate the public about cancer screening and the potential for successful treatment if detected early.
The objective was to identify cancer in its early stages, thereby reducing the cancer rate and associated mortality in the state, she said.
Given Meghalaya’s ranking as the number one state in cancer cases in the country, Dr. Mawlong stressed the importance of raising awareness about the early warning signs of cancer, dos and don’ts, and seeking prompt treatment from designated hospitals within the state.
Currently, Shillong Civil Hospital, NEIGRIMS, and Tura Civil Hospital provide cancer care and services.
Dr. Mawlong highlighted the need to equip district medical staff, mid-level health providers (MLHPs), and Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs) with the necessary skills to combat the increasing cancer burden in the state.
Additionally, village health councils and religious leaders will be educated about the early warning signs of cancer and the importance of early detection, she informed.
Presently, the state is witnessing head and neck cancers as the most prevalent types.
Research suggests that the habitual use of betel nut and tobacco is a leading cause of cancer-related diseases in the state.
Dr. Mawlong urged attendees to overcome their fear of cancer and take advantage of the government’s free screening programmes.
Dr. Rezia K Sangma, Senior Medical & Health Officer at Resubelpara CHC, further elaborated on the importance of cancer screening programmes and the early signs and symptoms.
Dr. Rezia informed attendees that the hospital is equipped with basic testing facilities for cancer screening, and beneficiaries of the Meghalaya Health Insurance Scheme (MHIS) can avail treatment free of cost.
She also urged the attendees to actively participate in the programme and support the fight against cancer.
