Shillong: Security personnel in Meghalaya’s Ri-Bhoi district averted a potential tragedy after an improvised explosive device (IED) was discovered at Umsning market and safely defused late Saturday evening, police said.
According to Ri-Bhoi Superintendent of Police Vivekanand Singh, an abandoned bag suspected to contain explosives was spotted in a compound near the Meghalaya Rural Bank at Umsning market.
A bomb detection and disposal squad (BDDS) and a K-9 unit were immediately deployed to the site.
Upon examination, the BDDS confirmed the presence of explosives and safely neutralised the device.

Preliminary analysis revealed that the IED was assembled using 4.7 kg of gelatine, 10 detonators, and around 50 iron rod fragments intended to act as splinters.
The materials were seized in accordance with standard operating procedures, and no casualties or property damage were reported during the operation, officials confirmed.
Police have registered a case and launched an investigation. One suspect has been identified, and efforts are underway to apprehend him, the SP added.
