Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Monday laid the foundation stone for a new annexe of Meghalaya House in New Delhi, aimed at enhancing accommodation and facilities for visitors from the State in the national capital.
The foundation-laying ceremony was held at 9, Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Road in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong and General Administration Department (GAD) Minister Sosthenes Sohtun.
The proposed annexe will be developed in two phases within the existing Meghalaya House परिसर, which was originally constructed in 1971 on a 1.99-acre plot.
The first phase will include 24 guest rooms and a meeting hall, and is estimated to cost Rs. 22 crore.
Addressing the gathering, Sangma said Meghalaya House in Delhi must primarily serve the people of the State by offering a comfortable and welcoming stay to officials and visitors alike.
He said the additional rooms would help meet the increasing demand from people travelling to Delhi for official work, interviews, competitive examinations, medical treatment and other purposes.
The chief minister instructed officials to ensure that the new structure meets high construction standards and is equipped with modern amenities.
He expressed confidence that the project would result in improved infrastructure supported by efficient services.
Sangma said the annexe would significantly increase the accommodation capacity of Meghalaya House and should emerge as the preferred choice for residents of the State visiting Delhi.
He also stressed the need for timely completion of the project.

Emphasising cultural identity, the chief minister said the building should have an iconic design that reflects the culture and traditions of Meghalaya.
He added that public spaces within the complex must be planned to serve visitors in the most effective manner.
Highlighting the importance of hospitality, Sangma urged staff to complement infrastructure with warmth and sensitivity.
He said a welcoming attitude and personal touch could make a meaningful difference, especially for first-time visitors from the State.
Once completed, the Meghalaya House Annexe is expected to strengthen Meghalaya’s institutional presence in the national capital and improve facilities for people from the State visiting New Delhi.
