Shillong: The Meghalaya government has honoured a tourist guide and 35 others for their pivotal role in solving the chilling murder case of Raja Raghuvanshi, who was allegedly killed by his wife, Sonam, and her four accomplices during their honeymoon in the state.
Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh handed out cash rewards totalling Rs. 5.4 lakh to Albert Pde, a travel guide, and several mountaineers and tour facilitators who actively assisted the police during the investigation and search operations.
The event recognised their efforts in uncovering the tragic crime that unfolded in the Sohra region of East Khasi Hills.
Raghuvanshi and Sonam had been reported missing on May 23 while vacationing in Meghalaya.
A ten-day search led to the discovery of Raghuvanshi’s body in a gorge on June 2, while Sonam was later arrested in Uttar Pradesh.
Three of her accomplices were apprehended in Madhya Pradesh.
Pde, who played a key role in the investigation, recalled spotting the couple on May 23, accompanied by three men, as they climbed the 3,000 steps from Nongriat to Mawlakhiat.
His detailed account and ability to identify one of the suspects from police photographs proved crucial.
Speaking at the felicitation event, Lyngdoh assured visitors of Meghalaya’s commitment to safety and justice.
“Unlawful activities will not be tolerated,” he said, adding that the government plans to install CCTV cameras at key tourist locations to enhance security.

The case has drawn national attention, but the swift response by local authorities, aided by the community, has underscored Meghalaya’s resolve to maintain its reputation as a safe and welcoming destination for travellers.
