Shillong: The Meghalaya government has decided to temporarily halt the proposed construction of a skywalk at Barik Point in Shillong due to concerns raised by a recent assessment report.
The report suggested that proceeding with the project could lead to severe traffic congestion in the city, particularly in the busy areas around Police Bazaar.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma made this announcement, stating, “We have decided to put the skywalk project on hold for now. Our decision comes after a careful review of assessments which indicated that initiating the project would cause significant traffic congestion, especially in this critical area of the city.”
While the plans for the skywalk were ready, Sangma explained that the government was faced with a crucial decision: whether to begin construction and endure a year or more of traffic disruptions or to delay the project until a better solution is found.
He said that after careful consideration, the government chose to prioritise public convenience and ease of traffic movement.
“Although the skywalk would have been a great addition to the city’s infrastructure, we felt that beginning construction now would create unbearable traffic congestion, particularly towards Police Bazaar, which would cause considerable inconvenience. As a result, we have decided to put the project on hold for the time being,” he added.
