Shillong: The Meghalaya government has formulated a comprehensive action plan for the revival and cleaning of the Wahumkhrah River.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Thursday convened a meeting with government officials and civil society representatives.
During the meeting, the Chief Minister emphasized the need for a multi-pronged approach, highlighting the identification of strategic zones along the river to address the persistent challenges of littering and improper waste disposal that have severely degraded the river’s ecosystem.
“Strategic zones will be identified with enhanced surveillance in vulnerable areas where littering and improper garbage disposal remain major challenges,” CM Sangma posted on X.
The state government will also explore the feasibility of bioremediation techniques in cleaning the river.
Notably, bioremediation uses microorganisms to break down harmful substances into less toxic or non-toxic forms in contaminated soil, water, or air.
It’s a sustainable approach to environmental cleanup, utilizing natural processes instead of harsh chemicals or physical methods.
He said, “While the physical cleaning of the river is underway along with other efforts for proper garbage disposal, lasting change will only be possible through active and sustained community involvement.”
He stressed the importance of close collaboration with the Dorbar Shnong (traditional village councils) and local residents.
