SHILLONG: The government has swiftly moved to address concerns following the collapse of a portion of the outer boundary wall of the PA Sangma Sports Complex in Tura.
The incident, which occurred near the Sewage Treatment Plant and Indoor Hall 2, prompted immediate action from authorities.
In a statement released on Sunday, the government informed that a family affected by the incident has been relocated and provided with temporary relief measures.
The government further assured the public that while the collapse had not impacted the main structure of the stadium, steps were being taken to assess the situation thoroughly.
The company responsible for the construction, Hindustan Steelworks Construction Ltd. (HSCL), has been directed to provide a detailed report on the incident.
Additionally, continuous on-ground monitoring of the situation is being conducted, with Public Health Engineering (PHE) personnel assisting in the clearance of clogged pipes and the removal of debris.
However, the incident has sparked criticism from political parties in the state, including NDA ally Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Bernard Marak, a leader of the BJP in Tura, expressed concerns about the safety of nearby residents and called for concrete measures to ensure the stability of the wall.
Meanwhile, the Opposition, Trinamool Congress (TMC) has demanded an independent probe into the collapse and urged for the blacklisting of the company responsible for implementing the project.
Richard Marak, TMC state youth president, highlighted the importance of holding accountable those responsible for the incident.
This is not the first-time concerns have been raised regarding the stability of the PA Sangma Stadium.
In 2023, the collapse of a portion of the stadium prompted legal action, with the High Court of Meghalaya intervening to address the issue.
While previous orders mandated repairs to the collapsed portion, the recent incident underscores the need for thorough investigation and accountability measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
