Meghalaya govt rejects ban on outside tourist taxis, opts to push local operators

Shillong: The Meghalaya government has turned down a demand to bar tourist taxis from outside the state, stating that such restrictions are not permitted under existing law.

Instead, the administration plans to encourage greater use of local tourist taxis through coordination with stakeholders in the hospitality and tourism sectors.

The issue was discussed during a meeting held on Tuesday between Deputy Chief Minister in charge of Transport Sniawbhalang Dhar and representatives of the All Khasi Meghalaya Tourist Taxi Association (AKMTTA).

Addressing the media after the interaction, Dhar said the discussions were constructive and helped clarify the government’s position.

According to the deputy chief minister, legal opinion obtained from the Advocate General makes it clear that vehicles registered outside Meghalaya cannot be prevented from entering or operating in the state.

He said this legal constraint was explained to the taxi association, which understood the government’s position.

While rejecting the demand for restrictions, the government agreed to take steps to support local operators.

Dhar said hotel owners, resort operators and tour agencies would be convened for discussions and urged to preferentially engage local tourist taxis for visitors.

He added that another round of talks would be held with the taxi association at the level of transport and tourism department officials to work out practical measures to improve opportunities for local drivers.

Dhar also stressed the importance of service quality, urging local taxi operators to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy, clean and well-maintained, and that drivers remain disciplined and professional to ensure a positive experience for tourists.

The government is also exploring additional initiatives to boost tourism in the state, including the possible development of a dedicated application to highlight Meghalaya’s destinations and tourism-related services.
