SHILLONG: The Meghalaya government is actively working to find an alternative route for vehicles to reach the state capital, bypassing the Umiam dam.
Concerns over the dam’s safety have prompted the government to seek a detour.
Minister in-charge of Power, AT Mondal, announced on Thursday that the government is identifying an alternative route as there are growing concerns over the safety of the Umiam dam.
“We have already requested Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar that we should have an alternative route as soon as possible. Work is ongoing to ensure that an alternative route is identified so that people and commuters do not suffer,” Mondal said.
The government has imposed restrictions on heavy vehicles exceeding 4 metric tons from crossing the bridge. These restrictions were implemented in consultation with experts to minimize risks.
While some criticisms have arisen due to these restrictions, Minister Mondal clarified that the government’s primary concern is the safety of the dam, not merely the bridge.
He stated that the government is strictly adhering to the recommendations of IIT Guwahati regarding the dam’s safety.
