Shillong: The Meghalaya government on Monday felicitated the Special Investigation Team (SIT) for cracking the sensational murder of Raja Raghuvanshi, even as the state police launched a dedicated Anti-Terror Squad (ATS) to strengthen counter-terror measures.
At a programme held at the police headquarters in Shillong, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and Deputy Chief Minister (Home) Prestone Tynsong lauded the SIT’s efficiency and commitment in solving the case within a short time.
Those honoured included SIT chief and SP (City) Herbert Kharkongor, Sohra officer-in-charge Anthony Khongsit, and other members of the team.
Raghuvanshi was killed in May at a parking lot along the cliffside in Weisawdong.
Investigations revealed his wife, Sonam, was allegedly involved in the crime with associates from Indore, Madhya Pradesh.
The SIT filed its chargesheet in August.
On the same day, Meghalaya Police formally launched the ATS, which will exclusively deal with terrorism and anti-national cases in the state.
Deputy Inspector General Aditya Goenka said the unit would bolster preparedness against emerging threats.
“The ATS will focus entirely on terror-related matters to ensure citizens continue to live in peace,” Goenka added.
