Shillong: Meghalaya Governor Chandrashekhar H. Vijayashankar has constituted a committee to examine the long-standing demand for the establishment of a ‘winter capital’ at Tura.
The all-party committee, comprising recognised and registered political parties, will be headed by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma or a minister to be nominated by the chief minister.
The Governor has requested all political parties to depute two representatives for the committee.
The government department related to the matter will also be invited during deliberations to be held by the committee.
The committee will study and examine the feasibility of setting up of winter capital at Tura.
Besides, it will also examine the advantages and disadvantages of having two state capitals based on the demands made by various NGOs as well as civil societies.
Additionally, the committee will also seek the views of all stakeholders concerned and submit a report to the state government.
The Garoland State Movement Committee (GSMC) and the A’chik State People’s Front have urged Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to declare Tura as the state’s winter capital.

The GSMC emphasised that such a move would not only fulfill the long-standing demands of the A’chik community but also enhance the state’s administrative framework.
Tura, strategically located in the western part of Meghalaya, has been cited as an ideal location for a winter capital due to its geographical advantages and existing infrastructure capacity.
The Meghalaya governor also constituted an all-party committee to discuss matters related to railway connectivity in the state.
The committee will examine and find solutions, ways and means to introduce and construct railways in Meghalaya.
The committee will also assess the cost-benefit analysis of the introduction of railways in the state. Besides, the committee will seek the views of all stakeholders concerned and submit the recommendation to the state government.
