Shillong: Meghalaya Governor C H Vijayashankar and Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Thursday paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his 156th birth anniversary, coinciding with the International Day of Non-Violence.
In a message, Governor Vijayashankar extended warm greetings, emphasizing Gandhi’s unwavering commitment to truth, non-violence, and selfless service as pivotal in shaping a just society.
He noted that the global observance of the International Day of Non-Violence highlights the continued relevance of Gandhiji’s principles amid contemporary challenges, urging citizens to act with integrity, humility, and courage.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma paid floral tributes at Raj Ghat in New Delhi. Posting on X, he said Gandhi’s enduring legacy of truth and non-violence continues to inspire a more peaceful and compassionate world.

He added that the Father of the Nation’s ideals encourage living in harmony and serving the country with selflessness.
In Shillong, the Meghalaya government organised a solemn ceremony at the Main Secretariat.
Senior officials, staff, and dignitaries gathered to pay floral tributes to the Mahatma.
The programme, led by Chief Secretary Shakil P Ahammed, included wreath-laying at Gandhi’s statue.
Speaking on the occasion, Ahammed underscored the relevance of Gandhi’s values today, urging officials to uphold truth, simplicity, and unity in public service and personal conduct.
