Shillong: The Meghalaya Cabinet has approved the relocation of the police reserve from Shillong to Tynring, a part of the New Shillong Township.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced that the new police reserve will be set up on a 50-acre plot in Tynring, marking a significant step towards easing pressure on Shillong’s crowded urban spaces.
The decision to relocate the police reserve comes as part of the government’s broader plan to streamline city infrastructure and reduce congestion in Shillong’s central areas.
Spokesperson and Cabinet Minister Paul Lyngdoh explained that with the police reserve moving, the adjacent Shillong jail, located near the city’s commercial hub at Khyndailad, would also be relocated.
Lyngdoh further mentioned that the Urban Affairs Department would evaluate the best possible uses for the vacated land, considering the city’s evolving needs and urban planning requirements.

The current location of the police reserve and the overcrowded jail near Jail Road—an area seeing significant redevelopment, including the Courtyard by Marriott hotel and the renovation of the Meghalaya Transport Corporation property—has been seen as incompatible with the city’s plans for modernisation.
Addressing concerns about the timeline, Lyngdoh assured that the relocation would begin promptly, with authorities working to establish the new police reserve at the earliest.
