Shillong: The Meghalaya government has decided to carefully study the recommendations of the Expert Committee on the State Reservation Policy before arriving at a final decision, Cabinet spokesperson Paul Lyngdoh said on Monday.
Briefing reporters after the cabinet meeting, Lyngdoh explained that the committee’s report is extensive, running into thousands of pages, and cannot be acted upon hastily.
“Each recommendation carries significant weight and some even have legal ramifications. We will need time to go through them thoroughly,” he said.
The cabinet has already been briefed on the matter by the chief secretary, but members of the council of ministers have raised their own queries and concerns that require further clarification.
According to Lyngdoh, the report contains both suggestions for maintaining the status quo and proposals for new measures, all of which will need careful deliberation.

He further underlined that while the government has the authority to accept or reject the committee’s findings, its ultimate aim will be to ensure a balanced decision that considers the views of all stakeholders.
“Recommendations are not binding, but they serve as valuable inputs. The final call will rest with the state government,” Lyngdoh said.
Responding to questions, the minister pointed out that the report was only submitted in June and that the cabinet would not rush into a conclusion during the current assembly session.
“We will not make the mistake of rushing into decisions. The implications are wide-ranging and demand in-depth scrutiny,” he added.
