Shillong: More than 10,000 tribal students in Meghalaya have received financial assistance under the state’s ongoing scholarship programme.
Officials on Monday said the government has disbursed Rs. 6.17 crore as the second installment of the Umbrella Scheme Post-Matric Scholarship for the 2024–25 academic year.
The latest release benefits 10,346 Scheduled Tribe students enrolled in professional, postgraduate, and doctoral courses.
Authorities clarified, however, that the installment could not cover all applicants, since several students had yet to link their Aadhaar or bank accounts.
Figures from the Directorate of Higher and Technical Education put the total scholarship requirement at Rs. 102.4 crore for 60,226 eligible students.
While the Centre has already provided part of the funds in phases, the state government has pledged to release its share in line with Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma’s directions to meet the full obligation.
The department added that the pending amount will be distributed during the latter half of the 2025–26 financial year.
