Shillong: The Meghalaya government has directed the University of Science & Technology, Meghalaya (USTM) to postpone the opening of the PA Sangma International Medical College and Hospital until necessary legislation is passed.
Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh announced this decision following a cabinet meeting on Friday.
Lyngdoh said that the state government has decided not to allow USTM to operate its medical college until a suitable law is enacted.
She emphasized that the government is obligated to oversee various aspects such as seat allocation, fees, and course offerings.
“To address these concerns, the Health Department will draft legislation for consideration in the upcoming cabinet meeting,” she said.
Lyngdoh stated that the allocation of seats and other details of the proposed medical college must be monitored, and the Act will set guidelines for medical colleges in the state.
Notably, the USTM has already allocated 40 seats for Meghalaya students and sought a Rs 233 crore interest-free loan from the state government.
