Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong has inaugurated the construction of the Nongpoh-Umden-Sonapur (NUS) road in a ceremony held at Umden, Ri Bhoi district.
This marks a significant step forward in addressing long-standing infrastructure issues in the region.
The long-awaited project aims to transform the lives of residents in Umden and nearby areas by improving transportation and connectivity.
For years, the deplorable condition of the Nongpoh-Umden-Sonapur road, especially during the monsoon season, has been a major source of frustration for the local community.
The construction plan for the NUS road is divided into two phases.
Phase one will span 20 kilometers from Nongpoh to Umden, with a budget allocation of Rs. 49.53 crore under the state’s road development plan.
Phase two will cover 38.6 kilometers from Umden to Sonapur, funded under PMGSY III Batch I at a cost of Rs. 47.20 crore.
The completed road will feature a 5.5-meter-wide intermediate lane to enhance safety and efficiency for commuters.
During the foundation-laying ceremony, Deputy Chief Minister Tynsong highlighted the state government’s commitment to improving infrastructure across Meghalaya.
“The government has been tirelessly working to upgrade Meghalaya’s infrastructure. Over the years, we have invested thousands of crores in road development, with many projects either completed or progressing steadily,” he stated.
Tynsong detailed the funding allocations, which include Rs. 1,100 crore under the state plan, Rs. 1,100 crore from PMGSY, Rs. 400 crore from the Central Infrastructure Fund (CIRF), Rs. 140 crore from the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF), and Rs. 2,000 crore from the World Bank.
Nongpoh MLA Mayral Born Syiem expressed heartfelt gratitude to Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, and other stakeholders who contributed to making the project a reality.
Syiem stated, “For years, the people of Umden have endured immense hardship due to this road’s condition. Today, we finally witness a response to their long-pending grievances.”
He further said that the initiative is not just about constructing a road; it’s about changing lives and enhancing the socio-economic prospects of the region.
The event also witnessed the presence of notable dignitaries, including Umsning MLA Dr. Celestine Lyngdoh, Nongpoh MDC Balajied Rani, and senior officials from the Public Works Department (PWD) Roads and Buildings, emphasizing the project’s significance.
The NUS road project is expected to bring substantial benefits, including improved connectivity, economic growth, and an enhanced quality of life for residents.
With the commencement of this transformative project, the state government reaffirms its dedication to addressing the region’s infrastructure needs.
