Shillong: The Meghalaya government has formed a committee to address the concerns raised by the tourist taxi drivers in the state.
The committee, led by the Director of Tourism, comprises representatives from various departments, including Tourism, Law, Police, district administration, and relevant stakeholders.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma announced the formation of the committee on Wednesday, stating that he had received a letter from the Taxi Association highlighting their issues. He emphasized the importance of involving stakeholders in finding a comprehensive solution.
“We have asked the Director of Tourism to set up a committee with members from the departments concerned and the stakeholders to come up with a comprehensive solution,” Sangma said.
The committee will also include representatives from the taxi association and drivers.
The chief minister said the committee will work together to identify the problems, propose solutions, and assess the potential impact of any actions taken.
The government aims to make a decision after thoroughly evaluating the situation and considering the input from all stakeholders.
The committee is expected to meet with everyone involved and submit a report to the government soon.

Notably, the All Assam United Motor Transport Association has threatened to halt the plying of commercial vehicles, carrying daily essentials from Assam, to Meghalaya in response to an ultimatum issued by the All Khasi Meghalaya Tourist Taxi Association.
The latter has demanded restrictions on tourist vehicles from outside Meghalaya operating in the state.
