SHILLONG: The Meghalaya cabinet has amended the Meghalaya Identification, Registration (Safety and Security) of Migrant Workers Act, 2020.
The Act has been amended to rigorously scrutinize the antecedents of the migrant workers.
The government will utilize the central Crime and Criminal Tracking Network System (CCTNS) to meticulously verify the backgrounds of all migrant workers to enhance security.
The government will allow those workers without any criminal records to join Meghalaya’s workforce.
The local police will also be able to verify the antecedents of migrant workers based on the data available in the CCTNS system. The Labour Department will coordinate with the state police to record and register properly verified migrant workers.
Besides, the cabinet has also decided to increase penalties to deter violations. The offenders will have to face a hefty fine of Rs 1 lakh, and imprisonment for a term not exceeding three months for repeated offenders.
These amendments aim to establish stricter guidelines for interstate migrant workers, preventing any potential increase in crime rates in Meghalaya.
