SHILLONG: Umiam Lake, renowned for its breathtaking beauty en route to Shillong, is poised for a transformation into a major tourist hub.
The Meghalaya Forest Department has agreed to allocate 300 acres of land for the lake’s development, aiming to enhance its appeal as a top tourist destination in the Northeast.
Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh announced this development following a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday.
“We are pleased with the Forest Department’s decision to allocate 300 acres of land to boost tourism at Umiam Lake. Our vision is for Umiam to not only be a premier attraction in Meghalaya but in the entire Northeast region,” Lyngdoh told the press.
The initiative includes plans to expand facilities under the Meghalaya Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC), introducing additional entertainment zones, and upgrading accommodations at the Orchid Lake Resort.
“We envision introducing water sports and enhancing recreational options, identifying activities that will appeal to tourists,” Lyngdoh added.
Meanwhile, progress continues on the Umiam dam and the retrofitting of the bridge, which has been a bottleneck on the Guwahati-Shillong Road for the past five months.
Originally slated for completion by June, Meghalaya Power Minister AT Mondal assured that the bridge will be fully operational by the first week of August, alleviating traffic woes for commuters.
The developments are part of Meghalaya’s broader strategy to boost tourism infrastructure and attract more visitors to its natural wonders, particularly enhancing Umiam Lake’s allure as a prime destination in the region.
