Shillong: The floods and landslides triggered by incessant rains in Meghalaya’s Garo Hills region have claimed 10 lives so far.
The relentless rainfall since Friday midnight has impacted all five districts, especially West Garo Hills, South West Garo Hills and South Garo Hills.
As per the latest reports, a total of 54 villages with a population of 4,954 from 330 households have been impacted.
58 houses have been damaged and 10 animals have died due to the floods.
The damage to infrastructure includes 18 roads, one PHC, one health sub centre and one school. Rescue and relief efforts are ongoing in the affected areas.
The border road and the national highway connecting South Garo Hills to West Garo Hills have been damaged, cutting off the two districts from each other.
On Saturday, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma held a review meeting with the Garo Hills district administration to assess the destruction caused by the incessant rainfall-induced floods and landslides in the Garo Hills region.
He informed that all wooden bridges have been identified in the state, assuring their replacement with modern structures or bailey bridges.
The chief minister ordered the immediate reconstruction of washed-away bridges.
Sangma directed that all efforts should be made to ease public life and ensure adequate relief operations.
Meanwhile, Power Minister Abu Taher Mondal visited West Garo Hills on Saturday to assess the damage caused by the floods and landslides.
He visited the relief camps in Dalu and nearby areas, interacting with the affected families and assessing the current situation.
Mondal said that partial electricity restoration in the Dalu area would improve mobile network and internet connectivity.
