Shillong: Authorities in Meghalaya have ramped up security measures in response to a bomb threat ahead of the Republic Day celebrations.
A 37-year-old man, identified as Edward Maiong, was arrested from his temporary residence in Lower New Colony, Laitumkhrah, for allegedly threatening to plant multiple bombs in Shillong city.
Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister, Prestone Tynsong, confirmed that the government has instructed all district administrations to take necessary precautions to ensure a peaceful Republic Day.
He stated that investigations and interrogations of the accused are ongoing.
“The state police are fully engaged in getting to the bottom of this,” Tynsong assured.
He also emphasised that the government has issued clear directives to district administrations and police forces to maintain law and order.
“We are committed to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens, and that Republic Day celebrations will proceed peacefully,” he added.
In the lead-up to January 26, the state police have heightened security measures across Shillong and the surrounding areas.

The East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police (SP) reported that extensive security checks, combing operations, and increased patrolling are being carried out throughout the city and district.
These measures aim to prevent any disruption to the Republic Day festivities.
“We are conducting intensive combing operations in the border areas and outskirts of the city. Advisories have been issued, and additional forces have been deployed to strengthen security,” the SP explained.
He further assured the public, saying, “We are fully prepared to ensure peace and security, so everyone can safely enjoy the Republic Day celebrations.”
