Shillong: Meghalaya is the second fastest-growing economy in India, averaging 10% growth over the past three years, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said on Wednesday while inaugurating the Nongkharai Presbyterian Higher Secondary School at Umsohpieng.
The ceremony was attended by government officials, community members, students, and other dignitaries.
Sangma highlighted the state government’s emphasis on welfare, infrastructure, and human resource development, noting that Rs. 3,654 crores have been allocated to education, along with grants-in-aid and other support.
He also spoke about reforms in the education sector, including a structured salary system for ad hoc and SSA teachers, aimed at strengthening the system over the next 10–20 years.
Focusing on youth development, the chief minister encouraged parents, teachers, and communities to guide students toward constructive pursuits through sports, music, entrepreneurship, and social programmes.
He announced a contribution from the Chief Minister’s Special Grant Fund to provide musical instruments for students at Nongkharai Presbyterian Higher Secondary School and Sijun Memorial School, underlining music’s role in fostering creativity and cognitive growth.
Guest of Honour Methodius Dkhar, Minister for Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, lauded the chief minister for attending and stressed the school’s significance for the local community.
He also acknowledged the contributions of former leaders D.D. Lapang and P.A. Sangma in supporting the institution’s development.

Other dignitaries included MLA Remington Gabil Momin, local MDC Lurshai Kharbani, and several government and community representatives.
Rev. A. Nongbri, President of the School Managing Committee, spoke about the school’s vision of promoting academic excellence, creativity, and character development, while Secretary Rev. S.B. Lyngdoh outlined the school’s journey, recent construction, and future plans for RCC fencing, additional staff, and girls’ hostels.
The inauguration concluded with cultural performances by students, showcasing the school’s commitment to holistic education.
