Shillong: The district administration of East Khasi Hills district has issued a weather advisory warning of thunderstorms, heavy rain and gusty winds in several parts of the district between March 15 and March 19, urging residents to remain alert and take precautionary measures.
According to the advisory issued by the office of the Deputy Commissioner in Shillong, the forecast is based on inputs from the India Meteorological Department.
The weather department has predicted that on March 15, isolated places in the district may experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, heavy rainfall, hail and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40–50 kmph.
On March 16, thunderstorms and lightning with winds of 30–40 kmph along with heavy rain are expected at isolated locations.
For March 17, the forecast indicates the likelihood of thunderstorms with lightning and heavy rainfall in parts of the district. On March 18 and 19, isolated areas may witness thunderstorms and lightning, the advisory said.
The district administration has urged residents to secure loose objects such as tin sheets, bricks, signboards and other materials that could be blown away by strong winds.
People have also been advised to switch off electrical appliances during lightning to reduce the risk of damage or accidents.
Authorities cautioned the public to remain vigilant during heavy rainfall as there is a possibility of flash floods, particularly in areas near rivers and streams.

Residents have been advised to avoid venturing close to water bodies, drains, culverts and waterfalls, and not to attempt crossing moving water.
The advisory also warned motorists against driving through flooded areas and urged people to stay away from electric poles and power lines to avoid the risk of electrocution.
Citizens have been asked to avoid stepping out during hailstorms and to seek assistance by dialing the emergency helpline 112 in case of any disaster-related situation.
The district administration said all sector magistrates, block development officers and local headmen have been informed to ensure the advisory is widely communicated to residents across the district.
