Shillong: The District Magistrate of East Khasi Hills has imposed a strict ban on the use of toxic substances and explosives in the Umiam River.
The ban covers the stretch within the Umlyngka village boundary, extending from Sdad Wah Umkhrah to Sdad Jlu.
This directive, issued under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), prohibits the use of harmful chemicals such as bleaching powder, ammonium sulfate, pesticides, and dynamite.
It also restricts the use of unregulated fishing nets and other destructive tools that threaten the river’s aquatic life.
The decision follows alarming reports of individuals employing hazardous methods to indiscriminately kill fish, leading to significant ecological damage.
These activities have been linked to the degradation of the river’s ecosystem and the endangerment of its aquatic species.
