Shillong: The East Jaintia Hills district administration has demolished all unauthorised coke plants operating in the district, officials said on Sunday, bringing such units to a complete halt in compliance with court directives.
Deputy Commissioner Shivansh Awasthi said a joint enforcement team comprising officials of the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board and the police carried out the demolition drive under the supervision of Sub-Divisional Officer Manish Kumar.
The action followed the identification of 16 coke plants that had been established without mandatory approvals under existing government norms.
Of these, five units had been dismantled earlier. Notices were issued in October 2025 to the remaining 11 plants, asking their owners to submit compliance documents for regularisation.

However, no response was received from any of the operators, prompting the administration to proceed with coercive action.
In pursuance of directions issued by the Meghalaya High Court, the demolition drive was launched on December 13.
Officials said seven of the 11 unauthorised plants were demolished by the authorities, while the remaining four were found to have already been dismantled by their owners.
“All 11 unauthorised coke plants are now non-operational,” Awasthi said, adding that the administration would continue to monitor the area to prevent any illegal resumption of activities.
