Shillong: The East Khasi Hills district administration in Meghalaya has directed that fire safety audits be carried out across all types of establishments in the district to curb repeated fire incidents.
The order was issued by Deputy Commissioner and Chairperson of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) Rosetta Mary Kurbah, who directed that detailed fire safety audits be conducted across residential homes and apartments, commercial shops, hotels, restaurants, and markets, educational institutions, hospitals and clinics, government offices, halls, and other public buildings.
The administration’s decision follows growing concern over frequent fire accidents in the state.
Recently, Meghalaya Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Lahkmen Rymbui informed the Assembly that at least 104 families have suffered losses due to fire-related incidents over the past five years, underscoring the need for stricter preventive measures.
All establishments are advised to apply for a Fire Clearance Certificate or Fire No Objection Certificate through the official online portal at investmeghalaya.gov.in or approach the Superintendent of Police (Fire & Emergency Services) for assistance.
