SHILLONG: With the incumbent Director General of Police slated to step down from the post following the end of his two-year tenure on May 19, the Union Public Service Commission has recommended three names to replace LR Bishnoi.
The UPSC’s recommendations for the position of the new DGP stem from five nominees submitted by the government.
The recommended candidates, all IPS officers hailing from the Assam-Meghalaya cadre, include Idashisha Nongrang (1992 batch), Ram Prasad Meena (1993 batch), and Deepak Kumar (1994 batch).
Of the three names, Nongrang has been reportedly touted as a forerunner for the post, and the state cabinet, responsible for the appointment of the new DGP, is expected to meet soon to finalise the decision.
However, prior approval from the Election Commission is required due to the ongoing enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct for the Lok Sabha Elections.
Nongrang currently serves as the Director General of Meghalaya Civil Defence and Home Guards, while Meena holds the position of Additional Director General at the Border Security Force (BSF), and Kumar serves as the Additional Director General of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
Notably, Bishnoi’s departure was first announced by the Principal Secretary of the Home (Police) Department in a notification on December 2, 2023, and was confirmed again in the recent notification, signalling the end of his term.
During his tenure, Bishnoi initiated several measures aimed at enhancing the efficiency and integrity of the state’s law enforcement agencies.
Efforts were particularly directed towards combating the drug menace and improving overall policing standards, especially in the capital city of Shillong.
Recently, however, the office of the DGP has come under scrutiny over the deaths of three non-tribals in Ichamati and Mawali Mawroh in Shillong.
Following the murders, the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission issued notices to the DGP, requesting a detailed report on the cases within 15 days, starting May 6.
