SHILLONG: The ongoing development of Shillong Airport has been identified as a key driver for the economic and tourism growth of the state.
The expansion is expected to allow for the operation of larger, heavier, and more sophisticated jet aircraft, which will facilitate both passenger and cargo transport.
This development has the potential to significantly boost the state’s connectivity and infrastructure.
In a hearing at the Meghalaya High Court, the Advocate General for the state revealed that while steps had been taken for land acquisition required for the airport’s expansion, the land has not yet been handed over to the airport authorities.
Dr. N. Mozika, the Deputy Solicitor General of India representing the Airports Authority of India (AAI), informed the court that the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is currently reviewing the proposal and plan for the airport’s expansion.
P Yobin, the Amicus Curiae in the case, emphasised the need for the airport’s development to be completed swiftly and urged that the DGCA be formally notified to ensure timely action.
Dr. Mozika responded, stating that the DGCA is already collaborating with the AAI, and no additional notices were necessary.
The court, recognising the importance of the project, urged that concrete steps be taken to extend the runway, develop essential infrastructure, and expand the overall facilities at Shillong Airport.
It directed the state government to ensure that the necessary land is acquired and handed over to the Airports Authority of India within the next three months.
Furthermore, the court instructed the Director General of Civil Aviation, in collaboration with the Airports Authority of India, to approve and implement a comprehensive plan for the airport’s expansion, following the land handover.
The complete expansion plan should be in place within three months of the state government transferring the land.
The case is scheduled to be heard again on April 14, 2025, to assess the progress made by the state government and the Airports Authority of India.
The court requested that a detailed report outlining the actions taken be submitted by both parties to ensure accountability and transparency in the airport’s development.
