Shillong: With the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections expected later this year, the Congress party in Meghalaya has begun internal preparations, drawing a strong response from party members seeking nominations.
Senior party leaders said nearly 70 aspirants have submitted applications for Congress tickets from various constituencies in the Garo Hills region after the party opened the process over the past month.
Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee president Vincent H. Pala told reporters on Thursday that the party has completed most of the groundwork for the elections.

He said the selection of candidates would be finalised after the State Election Commission announces the poll schedule.
“The applications have already been received and the party is prepared. As per our usual practice, the list of candidates will be declared once the election dates are notified,” Pala said.
The Congress leadership is expected to begin the screening process soon, with an emphasis on selecting candidates who can strengthen the party’s prospects in the GHADC elections.
