The 152nd death anniversary of Pa Togan Nengminja Sangma, a revered Garo warrior and freedom fighter, was observed on Thursday at Chisobibra near Williamnagar in the East Garo Hills district of Meghalaya.
Pa Togan Nengminja Sangma is celebrated for his unwavering courage and sacrifice in the fight against British oppression.
He laid down his life protecting the freedom and dignity of his people, and his legacy continues to inspire generations to uphold justice and resist subjugation.
The event was graced by Meghalaya’s Minister for Soil and Water Conservation, PHE, and Housing, Marcuise N Marak, who paid homage to the Garo hero.
In his address, Marak highlighted Pa Togan’s significant contribution to India’s struggle for independence and his pivotal role in inspiring the Garo people to resist foreign domination.
“Pa Togan Nengminja Sangma was not just a warrior but a visionary who instilled a sense of independence among his people, encouraging them to stand strong against foreign rule. His sacrifice is a source of immense pride for the Garo community and Meghalaya as a whole,” Marak said.
Other dignitaries present included Albinush R Marak, the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC); Nikman Ch Marak, the Deputy CEM of GHADC; and the president of the Pa Togan Nengminja Sangma Memorial Association (PTNSMA).
Each speaker reflected on the enduring legacy of Pa Togan and the importance of remembering his contributions in the ongoing narrative of India’s freedom struggle.
The commemorative event was marked by speeches, cultural performances, and floral tributes at the memorial site, bringing together community leaders, government officials, and local residents.
It served as a reminder of the sacrifices made by unsung heroes like Pa Togan Nengminja Sangma, whose courage and dedication laid the groundwork for the freedoms enjoyed today.
The gathering also emphasized the need to educate future generations about the bravery of Meghalaya’s freedom fighters, fostering a sense of pride and responsibility to protect the state’s heritage and identity.
