SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma assured on Thursday that the police are actively pursuing the culprits responsible for the attack that killed a house construction labourer in Mawlai Mawroh on April 10.
Speaking to the press, the Chief Minister strongly condemned the incident and informed that he has called for a meeting with the Director General of Police (DGP) and the Chief Secretary to discuss the situation further.
He also directed both officials to maintain strict vigilance on the law-and-order situation in Shillong and surrounding areas.
Chief Minister Sangma informed that he has reached out to the victim’s family and have reassured them of the government’s commitment to address the matter, ensuring those responsible are held accountable under the law.

To bolster security measures in the area, Conrad Sangma announced plans to deploy extra forces and, if necessary, call-in additional reinforcements to closely monitor the situation.
The unfortunate incident occurred on April 10 when Arjun Ray (52), a labourer, was attacked by unidentified assailants at an under-construction site in Mawlai Mawroh.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Rituraj Ravi informed that the assault took place around 11:15 am, targeting three labourers working at the site.
Ray sustained severe injuries and was rushed to NEIGRIHMS hospital, where he succumbed to his wounds.
In recent weeks, Meghalaya has witnessed a disturbing rise in violence targeting non-tribal individuals, with Ray becoming the third victim of such assaults in just 16 days.
The previous incident occurred on March 27, when Ishan Singh and Sujit Dutta were brutally killed in Ichamati, located within the Shella constituency of East Khasi Hills.
According to reports, the attack occurred following an anti-CAA protest organised by a local students’ body in the area.
