SHILLONG: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, on Saturday, made his maiden visit to Mellim in South West Garo Hills and engaged with members of the Mellim Area Bee Keepers Association (MABKA).
The visit highlighted the significant strides made by over 200 villagers in Mellim, who have united under the Apiculture Mission to produce high-quality honey.
During the interaction, Chief Minister Sangma praised the initiative of MABKA and its members, acknowledging their dedication and entrepreneurial spirit in beekeeping.
The association, representing one of the thriving beekeeping groups in the district, conveyed to the Chief Minister the challenges faced by its beekeepers in sustaining their enterprise.
A primary appeal made by MABKA was for the establishment of a modern honey processing plant to boost production capabilities, alongside a multifacility centre for beekeeping training.
Additionally, they sought assistance in improving the marketing of their products to expand their reach.
In response to these requests, Chief Minister Sangma assured his support, urging the association to compile a comprehensive proposal detailing costs for infrastructure, machinery, and operational expenses.
He also advised MABKA to include the construction of an access road in their proposal to facilitate logistical operations.
The proposal is expected to facilitate government assistance in realising their developmental goals.
Highlighting the role of the District Commerce and Industries Centre in promoting the Apiculture Mission, the Chief Minister underscored the potential of MABKA to serve as a benchmark for other local communities.
Subsequently, Chief Minister Sangma inspected the proposed sites for the honey processing plant and multifacility centre in Hajongpara.
The visit concluded with Chief Minister Sangma expressing optimism about the future of beekeeping in Mellim and reaffirming the government’s commitment to supporting sustainable economic initiatives across Meghalaya.
